As the party investigates the area they think Kaellanna and Tara had their last stand, a 30' tall creature rises out of the magma river. Fully equal parts solid rock, magma, and fire the creature lets out a mournful moan just after Vel notices it and makes the rest of the party aware. Anything is possible, including mortal combat to the end ...

  1. A portion of Vel's mind knows the emerging behemoth must be comprised of some form of magical energies and quickly assesses it in those terms to see what can be gleaned from a study. (K.Arcana)
"He might be friendly..," Vel murmurs to himself. Glancing around he smirks and then points a hand at the strange form. "DIE!"

  2. While Vel is uncertain as to any specifics of this particular species, he is certain the creature the group is facing is some kind of elemental related to fire. As such, he is aware, that even though he has hit the creature, and damaged it, there is no augmentation for critically hitting it in any perceived soft spots. Please provide a damage roll for just straight damage (4d6 I think), or I can just cut in half what you rolled.

Halvdan takes the time to mount his bone horse and then draw his sword while defending himself from anything that may attack him.

Lev takes a 5' step away from the direction of the lava and lava creature, then asks the group in general and Vel specifically, "What should I do?"

    Avegnum is up.

  3. The lava giant lets out another mournful bellow before charging obliquely toward the group. It lashes out with one of it's massive Firey fists at the source of it's most recent pain, Vel. Hitting the much smaller opponent Vel takes 15 bludgeoning damage, and 7 fire damage, catches on fire, and goes flying through the air and lands prone at the base of a tree.

    Everyone else is up.

  4. The lava giant moans again looking quite sad - As sad As magma can look when it turns into lava. It looks around, planning its next attack, deciding which of its enemies is most worthy of burning to ash.

  5. Avegnum curses the disinterested gods that cleared his post as he was about to put it up and then closes with the giant(5ft Step to F4), despite the extreme dangers such proximity would impose and assumes Stonefoot Stance(+2AC/+2STR checks vs. larger creature) before unleashing an Elder Mountain Hammer Attack.

Vel, despite enjoying the sensation as the flames traveled across his clothes and skin, starts to roll around in an effort to put them out. If he's able, he'll also scramble to his feet.

"Do whatever you think is best Lev!" Avegnum shouts out. "You never really told us what you could do so if can fight, do so, or if you can heal or defend us do that... If things look really bad, get Vel out of here!"

Avegnum, hoping Halvdan will join in at some point, then swings his blade in a practiced maneuver before launching a Bonecrusher attack.

  6. Paul put this in the wrong place: "Halvdan get up off his lazy ass and wonders if the cask of beer he is carrying on the back of his boney ride will do any damage to this creature"

Avegnum dominates the battlefield at the expense of the lava giant, while Vel, with Lev's help, puts himself out and gets himself up, and General Halvdan decides it's a swift idea to through one of his four 5 gallon barrels of darkwood Karrnathi imperial stout at the enemy. Even though it's not a great weapon and is probably the best ale he's ever made, and the one he is famous for in the trenches of Karrnath, the barrel just barely manages to hit (Attack: (d20)17+8-4-2=19; DMG(5d6)=21). Even though the barrel does not break on impact, it does catch on fire. Even if the barrel survives, it will need several days for the ale to settle before it's drinkable.

Between the two warriors the lava giant has taken much damage. But prior to any thoughts of leaving the 30' tower of molten rock swings both of it's massive fists at Avegnum. For his troubles Avegnum takes relatively little physical damage, but the fire takes a toll: 24 bludgeoning damage, and 31 fire damage. He also finds himself on fire like Vel was.

Vel realizes any items he is wearing that are not magical are burnt almost to falling off.

Lev, wondering how he should fill-in decides to use any healing talents he has or after the fight. He assists Vel in putting himself out and getting up. Unfortunately that exposes him to an attack from the lava giant, who takes it. Even though he doesn't catch on fire he is hammered very hard. "You look like you have this creature, Avegnum, I'm going to help Vel. He needs my help to get back to his old self. Come on Vel, lets get to safety!"

  7. Depressed and enraged by the events of the past few days, Avegnum roars incoherently as the flames scorching his armor and body are seemingly absorbed and snuffed out. Snarling, the beast man shouts, "Your mother was a mud golem!"

  11. General Halvdan rides in to help the mongreloid Avegnum. For his efforts, the magma elemental swings at him, and lands a firey fist in Halvdan's Face. Though his armor protects him a little, the Karrnathi general still takes 13 damage from the impact, only 5 damage from fire, and he too catches on fire.

The magma elemental lets out a long, low, mournful moan before swinging it's massive fists at the much smaller Avegnum. Pummeling him twice the warrior takes 24 bludgeoning damage and 12 fire damage, as well as catching on fire again. The enemy steps 5' to it's left.

Everyone else is up. Good luck!

  12. Lev Follows Vel away from the battle (K2), covering him all the way from the sight of the lava elemental.

"I can do pretty much anything you need, Vel, within reason. I mean I can't make miracles happen, but I could cast Cure Critical Wounds, for instance. I'm good at most things, just not great. But my primary purpose is to change you back to the good and wholesome person that you used to be. I'm a kind of fix for those who die here and then spontaneously come back tainted by the evil below," Vel says to Lev once they are away from immediate danger. "Do you want me to fix you, Vel?" The silvery man finished with a pleading tone and look, as if he's begging Vel to let him.

  15. Lev pleads with Vel, "Come on Vel, let me fix what the evil below has done to you! Let me heal you and I won't bother you any more. When I heal you, you won't loose any power - In fact, not only will you feel better, but you will be stronger as well."

    2. As soon as Vel says yes to Lev the silvery man attempts to embrace the human, saying, "I must hug you for this to work, at least for several seconds."

If Vel does not resist than he is unable to shoot his warlock ray. If Vel does resis than I think a grappling scenario plays out. Please let me know if Vel let's Lev embrace him or resists.

      Delete
  17. Vel says "Yes", Lev tries to hug him and fails. Vel blasts the lava elemental, and Avegnum attacks it. Though it is obvious the elemental is severly hurt, by it's limping stumble of a walk, the elemental persists.

Rushing forward as much as it can from the short diastance between itself and it's opponents, the lava elemental pushes both Avegnum and the 'horse' & rider combination of Halvdan back by 5 feet. All three opponents (re)catch on fire and are burning. The horse takes 6 fire damage, Halvdan takes 4 fire damage and Avegnum takes 3 fire damage.

I will update the map and the status grid after i get home today, but everyone else is up now.

  18. Lev tries again, "Come on Vel, you said you wanted me to heal you. Lets just step back five feet and let me do my thing. I promise, you will feel better, be stronger, and love yourself more. What do you say, my friend? What do you say to a friesh start?"

  19. Sighing like a child whose play has been interrupted, Vel says, "Oh fine, Lev, let's get this over with but it had better do something since you're starting to annoy me." The human's voice has falling dangerously low as he finishes speaking but he does take a five foot step back as requested and allows Lev to hug him.

Oblivious to what is going on behind him, Avegnum focuses his thoughts on the maneuvers he had prepared for today and refreshes them as he launches a single attack at the magma giant.

  20. Vel steps back between two large trees a bit more out of the way from the fiery combat and annoyed by the silvery man. Following him in motion Lev embraces the warlock. Immediately Lev begins melting into Vel. Vel feels a tingling numbness where the construct's flesh touches his own - a cool tingly numbness counterpoised to the fiery burning surrounding the hum, well, mostly human, even though the flames cause him no discomfort or damage. Instantly Vel begins feeling better - no more altitude sickness, no more wounds, no more anger, no more foreign thoughts of doing harm and delighting in it where he used to be appalled by the thought of the possible idea that anyone would enjoy such things.

While Vel explores his new thought patterns and healing body, Avegnum takes no chances and strikes at the gigantic lava elemental giant. Hitting the creature hard, he severs both legs cleanly, but in doing so unleashes the inner turmoil of the elemental he combats. In a sudden flash the giant explodes and hurls fire, solid rock, molten rock and lava on everything within thirty feet. Avegnum, Halvdan, and the skeletal steed are all caught in the explosion. The shimmering, cocooned Vel-Lev managed to step out of the radius just before the explosion as if by foresight.

Avegnum manages to twist with the explosion and avoid half the damage. Halvdan and his mount are not as lucky. Avegnum takes 15 damage, Halvdan takes 27 damage, and the mount takes 25 damage.

As the explosion passes beyond the characters there is a shimmery bubble that follows the flaming rock. In the aftermath of both there is only a sphere of devastated, burning jungle and the lone skeletal steed that Halvdan rode in on. Neither the human or the mongrel man is anywhere to be seen.

A few seconds later, the shimmeryness of Lev has completely been absorbed into Vel. The human finds himself alone, in the mostly dark night, with a swath of burned jungle in front of him, and the skeletal, armored mount standing in the midst still burning. He feels better than he has in a long time. He feels free of any physical ailments or damage and unaffected by the extremely thin air and altitude. His thoughts are bright and happy, much like they had been a week earlier – though with a significant difference that he can’t quite explain. Vel finds himself completely healed, and now lawful good, though a bit mentally unhinged due to the experiences he has endured in the last couple days.

    4. Vel is definetly unhinged due to recent events. Though this may only be temporary.

  21. Looking around in bewilderment, Vel struggles to put together the scene around him into some form of coherent sense. The faint echo of something forgotten tantalizes his inner mind but when he attempts to focus on it the sensation vanishes. "Uh... hey there horsey, come get out of the fire."

  22. As the fire burns itself out from it's own force Fritz looks around a bit confused at loosing Halvdan though still feeling his emotional influence. Feeling no pain, and not being that bright, Fritz casually walks over to Vel who he recognizes as a recent ally. With his burning undead eyes and lipless horse-grin Fritz stares at Vel when he reaches the human, simply waiting and still burning.

    ReplyDelete
  23. After Vel pats Fritz-Shambles down and the rest of the burned jungle extinguishes the two are able to collect the missing barrel of Karrnathi imperial stout. As Vel struggles to get the 60 pound barrel back on the horse, who seems to understand him and work with him, but not speak in any way, he notices the dawn sun coming up. In the dawn light he can now see the giant city across the lava flow to the north, and the mountains that rise above and around the city on all sides, except to the south where his vision is blocked by the jungle-forest-marsh. At least several miles in all other directions Vel can see the jagged teeth-like, snow-capped mountains that surround the city. Seeing the snow makes Vel shiver even though the oppressive heat is only getting worse with the rising of the bright, clear sun. Even though he can feel the heat he doesn't feel any ill effects either from it or from the extreme altitude. Perhaps this is what Lev meant when he told Vel he would be better after the healing.

With dawn fully past Vel takes stock of his burnt equipment. Everything that isn't magical, or fully encased in a magical item (like bag of holding) is no longer usable due to burning damage. The bright clear light shows Vel the ruins to the north. Though they do not spread far large would be an understatement. Gigantic smooth stone ruins rise up above the small human. Even the shortest of the buildings are still more than 50' tall. Most tower well above 100' if not more than 150'. Though quiet and presently devoid of any movement, Vel gets the feeling the ruins are not abandoned. North of the lava flow there is no overgrowth eating into the stone as he would expect from the stories he has been told of the mysterious southern land of the giants, Xen'drik. Something has kept the ruins clean, but time has taken it's toll on the structures. Though still tall most are in some state of decay, with large blocks of smooth, non-descript stone having fallen to the sides of the gargantuan buildings.

He is no architect, but Vel does notice the extreme lack of ornamentation adorning any of the structures. Straight, simple, functional lines dominate the feeling of the art of this giant city's character. The stone itself is all the same sand-colored, perfectly flat rock that seems to have grown out of the earth, like the broken bridge he stands near that crosses the lava river between himself and the ruins he has heard so much danger of from his former fire giant companion. Taking this all in Vel turns to his left and sees a structure that stands out from the rest. Rising at least several hundred feet above the rest of the city there is a pale, whitish obelisk with it's tip about where Vel remembers seeing a light in the dark of the night. As he squints at the tip of the obelisk Vel notices the tip, even from here, is obviously not connected to the rest of the obelisk. Independent of the rest of the structure the pyramidal tip floats above the rest defying the nature of most things to fall, and reminding the warlock of the floating towers of Sharn.

  24. Fritz nudges Vel attempting to communicate that, "Hey, you know, I'm a horse, you can ride me."

Meanwhile...Halvdan pulls out his sword and commands it to "flame on" in an attempt to illuminate their ark surroundings.
