The party now sees that beside being a bright green 11' serpent with silver scales, and mithral-colored eyes, it also has large bat wings, that have unfurled from around it's snake body, uncovering two long arm-like appendages ending in large clawed hands. It's platinum colored fangs are much large than a normal large snake of it's approximate size.

Vik'Gotror causes his fiery self to become as fiery as he can. Any creature within 10' of him will take fire damage.

"This one looks angry," Vik'Gotror bellows as he happily smiles while flat on his back. "Dinner's served!"

  1. Knowing that delay could prove fatal, Avegnum moves towards the serpent (F9) while unsheathing his greatsword. Drawing raw strength from the earth beneath his feet and transferring it into ruinous power, the halfling lets his sword fall like an avalanche across silver scales, attempting to hammer it into submission.
    Elder Mountain Hammer:1d20+14=21:Hits!
    Damage:1d10+6+6d6=26 (Ignores DR/Hardness)
Then as a swift action, Avegnum assumes Stonefoot Stance in order to see off this larger threat. (+2STR checks, +2AC vs. enemies a size category larger than me; Stance ends if moved more than 5ft)

Seeing his companion veritably surge towards the creature, Vel 5 ft Steps back to E13 and unleashes a Frightful Blast at the serpent, glad that his attacks don't rely on strength.
    Attack:1d20+10=26vs.Touch:Hits!
    Damage:5d6=13, Will DC 17 Else Shaken, 22>17:Resists!
As coruscating black purple energy washes over the winged creature, charring occasional patches, Vel grimaces as he feels the more subtle aspect of his attack strongly rebuffed.

  2. The winged serpent slithers back and up, away from the small person's awesome sword blows. Its eye begin spiraling within their sockets. Only now does the party see that the eyes are white, and silver, and platinum, and mithral colored. All combined into the two large orbs it's hard for the party to take their eyes away from the serpents eyes, but everyone manages to with a slight struggle. The serpent then unleashes a cold, cloying miasma of greasy darkness, similar to what the spider creature did earlier. as it swirls around the party the mist chills them, and sucks at their souls. No one is unaffected, but the damage from the evil is small. though it is within range of the heat from Vik'Gotror the serpent does not seem to mind it, at least not as much as Avegnum's sword.

    Damage from darkness: Alton=8, Vel=10, Kaellanna=7, Tara=8

  3. Vel belatedly thinks to himself, "Hmmm, it might be useful to see if we know anything about what we're fighting.."
Squinting and concentrating on the serpent for identifiable features, the warlock sees what he knows.

  4. Vel see's much in this creature. He knows it is a half-fiend hybrid of a dream serpent. He knows that instead of being a magical beast, as it should be, it is a native outsider due to it's fiendish influences. He knows it has a venom that causes people to dream vividly after being bit, but that it likes to stay at a distance and effect it's prey with a hypnotic gaze that causes sleep. He knows the drow hunt them and revere them at the same time. Both preying on them and protecting them from outsiders. But since this one is half fiend it is smarter, stronger, can fly, has arms with claws, is resistant to most energy attacks as well as slightly resistant to physical attacks not of a magical nature. It is resistant to spells and spell-like effects, and posses a few spell-like effects concerning evil and darkness (Desecrate, Unholy Blight, Poison, Darkness). Vel recalls many things.

  5. "Watch out, guys, it's Evil! And tricky; we've got to watch out for poisons ans spells, look out for its eyes!" Vel gasps amidst the charred path.

  6. Tara moves up to G8 and bites at the serpent but misses (13).

Keallanna shoots the serpent with her bow for a total of 11 damage. [1st attack 23 to hit (13+10) for 9 damage (8+1); 2nd attack 21 to hit (16+5) for 2 damage (1+1)]

  7. Vik'Gotror stands up and moves a little closer to the serpent while waving his hands in the air and yelling deeply in what appear to be an attempt to scare the snake toward the party. Even though it is closer to the giant, and now looks to be shying away from the heat there are no visible signs that it has been burt by the fire.

  8. Shifting closer to dinner (5ft Step to E8), Avegnum lashes out twice in quick succession, hoping to fell the creature before it decides to use its wings to give itself a height advantage.

Sparing a quick glance back to Vel, Avegnum calls out, "Pour it on, Vel! We'll finish this beastie off yet!"

Nodding to his friend, Vel takes careful aim again and sends another bolt at the creature.

  9. Just when the battle looks almost over, Avegnum's approach is stymied when he gazes deeply into the serpents eyes while approaching to kill it. Surely his blows would have cut off the beast's head and supplied the party with dinner, but as he takes his first step toward the creature Alton instantly falls asleep in a pile at his own feet as if nacolepsy runs deep in his deep halfling veins.

Assuming Vel continues his course of action: He begins raising an arm to fire a ray of fiendish might at the half-fiend serpent in front of ... OH NO! ... Vel, too, looks into the serpents radiating, pulsating, flickering and sparkly eyes. Vel, too, falls to his own feet in a deep slumber.

    1. Vel tries the above, but now with his eyes closed after seeing what happened to Alton.

    2. Instead of Vel falling asleep he closes his eyes before shooting the snake. What he does not see is his fiendish ray fly true, and then vanish just before hitting the snake. If he had seen this he would have recognized the effect as the same as the spider lord he fought earlier today, and would realize he now knows what spell resistance looks like. But with his eyes closed he sees none of this.

  10. The serpent takes this opportunity to move away from the group and up the large tree behind it. This provokes an attack from Tara, if she wants. But then the snake slither-climbs up the tree to a height of 15' and then generates a area of darkness around it out to 20'. The darkness obscures the group's vision and allows for further misses due to concealment.

  11. Vik'Gotror roars in laughter at the sight of Alton falling asleep. "I forgot that happens sometimes," he yells heartily.

  12. Tara takes her AoO but her bite misses (12 to hit).

Being a skilled climber, Tara runs over to the bottom of the tree (D7) and attempts to chase the snake up the tree (28 to climb).

With nothing better to do, Kaellanna fires into the center of the are of darkness (17 to hit and 12 to hit).

  13. The darkness is not complete. The party can still see the serpent, there is just a 20% miss chance for each aimed attack (any attack that requires an attack roll). Go ahead and reconsider your actions an it you attack the serpent roll the miss % for each attack.

  14. Kaellanna still shoots at the serpent, but she missed anyway (why would she need to roll a miss chance if she already missed?).

  15. Tara begins to move toward the snake when she too falls to the ground in a sudden deep slumber.

Vik'Gotror says "Looks like the sleepies have taken over most of your party. You small ones want some help, or you think you can catch dinner sometime soon?"

    ReplyDelete
  16. Making sure he's looking at his feet, Vel opens his eyes and lifts his head only slightly to see exactly where Alton is lying. Shuffling over to the slumbering form (E10) he draws his Wand of Grease and shouts, "Wake up! You've got a flying serpent to kill so that we can eat it it! On your feet!"

Talking to Vik, "I suppose if I fall asleep your help would be probably be a good idea, though it might be amusing for you if we were to all fall asleep."

Knowing that meeting eyes with the creature is a bad idea, Vel glances around as carefully as possible with half closed eyes until he sees the darkness centered off of the ground around a tree. Aiming for what he hopes is the center of the area, he releases a blob of grease to try and bring the serpent crashing to the ground.

  17. "Awww, Tara is so cute when she sleeps..." Leaving the sleeping kitty to her cuteness for the time being, Kaellanna moves to G9 and gently shakes Alton to see if she can help Vel wake him up.

  18. Vel Lubes the tree the serpent is in causing the snake to take extra precautions when climbing. The serpent climbs up the tree another 30'before unfurling it's wings fully and looking like it's going to take flight. At this distance the snake has cover (+4 AC, +2 Ref) from the party in addition to the miss change (20%) granted by the darkness.

Vik'Gotror moves closer to the serpent, making his way through the undergrowth faster than the party would expect given his size and bulk. "I'll try a couple shots, but I think it's to far for me now."

Kaellanna and Vel are able to rouse Alton from his slumber by slapping him around a few times, but now he is awake, though prone and empty handed.

  19. Groggily, Avegnum staggers to his feet and, noticing that everyone is looking up at a nearby tree decides that his bow might be more useful in this situation.

"Blast! I really hoped that was going to work," Vel says dejectedly. Seeing Alton roused, "Nice of you to join us in the land of the waking but it looks like that thing is going to get away if we can't bring it down with some ranged attacks."
With a belly rumbling reminder urging him on to secure dinner, Vel aims a Frightful Eldritch Blast, attempting to make out the location of the serpent's coils through the obscuring darkness and leaves.
    Frightful Blast:1d20+10=19vs.Touch:Hits!, Damage:5d6=18

  20. Vel blasts the serpent with his fiendish eldritchness and it comes tumbling down from the tree crashing through the branches and crashing down on to Vik'Gotror amidst a pile of broken branches and leaves. The giant quickly turns his fire off to avoid over cooking dinner before it's served.

Everyone gets 650 XP for the encounter.

"Good," Vik'Gotror says as he untangles himself, "Now we can go back to camp and enjoy a nice warm dinner before sleeping."
